Walk My Dog...

So, you are interested in being a responsible dog walking citizen.  Well, you have come to the right place.  There are just a couple of things you should know.

  • Where and when can I walk my dog?
You may walk your dog in Lakewood and Kauffman parks during all hours the parks are open.

  • Are there any restrictions?  What are the Rules?
Act with pride and common sense.  Keep your dog leashed, pick up after yourself, and be aware of others using the park/path.  This will make dog walking in Lakewood's Parks a successful ordinance.

Some of the specific exceptions exclude dogs from:
a.    playground equipment, playground areas, and 30 feet immediately surrounding;
b.    the softball fields, whether or not they are in use;
c.    any garden or decorative areas planted with vegetables, flowers, shrubs, or other decorative vegetation;
d.    the Kiwanis Pavilion;
e.    the handicap-accessible ramp which extends from the eastern end of the top of the bluff to the lower Lakefront Promenade.

  • What about the waste pickup bag stations?  How do I use them?
There are stations scattered about the park which are filled with plastic bags you can use to pick up after your dog.  The practice of "Take a Bag, Leave a Bag" has been adopted, meaning the users of the park are responsible for bringing bags to fill the stations.  As you collect plastic grocery store bags, please bring them with you to help fill the stations.  And if you forget to bring a bag with you, please use the bags that are provided to clean up after your dog.

The stations are sponsored by local businesses who helped pay for them.  There are 6 stations at Lakewood Park and 2 at Kauffman park.

  • What else is there?
That's it!  Pretty easy, huh?  We all just have to work together and do our part to make this pilot project a success.  Enjoy the parks!
